The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes
Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes - Audiobooks
Douglas Wilmer, considered by many to have been the finest Holmes of stage and screen, reads four of Conan Doyle's wonderful stories, playing all the roles in character. These Wilmer readings (three from the "Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes) and one form "His Last Bow") have never been published before.
Douglas Wilmer's performances as Sherlock Holmes on BBC television in the mid-'60s were highly memorable and, for many, unequalled. In the 1990s, Penguin commissioned a number of readings by Wilmer which were issued first on cassette and later on CD. They were described on BBC Radio by Sir Christopher Frayling, former Chairman of the Arts Council and guest of honour at the Sherlock Holmes Society's Annual Dinner, as, “The finest of their genre”.
When Penguin stopped commissioning Wilmer, Philip Porter and Richard Lancelyn Green, who had produced the recordings, decided that they themselves should commission one more set of these brilliant readings before Douglas finally retired. For various reasons, they have not seen the light of day - until now!
We are very proud to present: "Silver Blaze", "The Stock-broker's Clerk", "The Yellow Face" and "The Adventure of the Cardboard Box".
