Jaguar XK DIY Restoration & Maintenance, by Bob Exelby

Available now!

An absolute sensation when first seen in 1948, in the midst of post-war austerity, the Jaguar XK 120 was both a stunningly beautiful car sold to all the top film stars, and a ruthlessly successful rally machine – and it remains just as effective on both counts today. A perfect XK 120, 140 or 150 could easily cost six figures in pounds, dollars or euros today – so how practical is it to buy a neglected example and restore it at home?

This is the story of how one man completely restored his XK 120 roadster, transforming it from dereliction into a thoroughly beautiful example of this iconic sports car. He also took the time to investigate and incorporate numerous detail improvements, making the car even more usable and practical for today’s roads, some 65 years after it was built.

Cable TV engineer Bob Exelby has a lifetime of home classic car rebuilds behind him and shares all the nuggets of information, advice and tips gleaned through his own blood (literally), sweat and tears over 50 years of ‘playing with old cars’. Even the most experienced make mistakes, and he freely shares his so that others can avoid them. This book is invaluable if you want to know what makes an XK ‘tick’, and if it’s the classic car for you – and vital if you own or are restoring one.

Book Reviews & Testimonials

'Many of you will know Bob and his two XKs (120 and 140) both of which he has restored himself. This book obviously covers the three years that Bob took to bring KRU 600, his XK120 OTS, from a garage find wreck to superb concours condition, but the title seriously under sells the breadth and depth of the content of the book. I personally am extremely unlikely ever to either carry out a "nut and bolt‟ restoration or indeed own a 120, yet I found the book genuinely absorbing and entertaining. Bob‟s deft and self-deprecating writing style cleverly inter-twines clearly explained technical aspects with all manner of useful asides such as the expected and unexpected choices that need to be made during restoration, the history of KRU600, and events that have brought him to this point in his car owning career. Much, if not most of the clearly described technical content (including the detailed appendices) is applicable to any XK engined Jaguar and indeed, any classic car of the post war to 1980s era, and give the book a relevance far outside the title making it a valuable reference for anyone considering tackling working on such cars.' 'Ordering process was very straight forward over the phone. Person I spoke to knew exactly what books I wanted and they were sent out next day.  Email confirmation was prompt.

'Books arrived well packaged and DHL sensibly left them with our neighbour as I was out on the day it was delivered.

'All in all very satisfactory.'  Tim Smith

Jaguar Design - A Story of Style

People * Process * Projects

by Nick Hull

Foreword by Ian Callum

One ingredient is common to every Jaguar – style.

Arguably a greater proportion of people have more passion for Jaguar than for any other car manufacturer. And the reason for this passion is style. Being more than merely functional motor cars, Jaguars stir the blood.

People like their Mercedes, BMW, Audi or Lexus, but they love their Jaguar!

Experts start with knowledge and experience, and so inevitably make assumptions and gloss over important details. Chris Rooke had played with classic cars before but had never fully restored one, and knew nothing about E-types.
